A, E, F North Shore Heritage Park Sports Fields

Our park has a soccer/lacrosse, base ball and soft ball field available for use by Brookhaven residents. These fields are available for league or informal games. To schedule times to use these fields call the Town of Brookhaven Parks Department at 451-6100. For those wishing to use the fields for informal play or practice you should realize that those who schedule the use of the field have “first rights” to the field.

 Multi-Use Paths

The park has a 0.7 mile perimeter path and a number of internal paths that connect different parts of the 17.2 acre park. The shared paths are used by walkers, joggers, parents strolling with strollers, and children on scooters and bikes. The paths are poplar recreational part of the park. Two park benches have been donated and placed along the paths. If you care to donate a bench please contact the Heritage Trust. It is hoped that some day old farm and highway machinery will be displayed between the perimeter path and NYS25A. (If you would care to help with this idea please contact the Heritage Trust.)

B Play Knoll

The play knoll is a peanut shaped hill that the Heritage Trust championed to be included in the park. Children enjoy walking, and running up and down the hill. Rolling is also fun and sledding is enjoyed if there is snow. The view out to the park is enjoyed by all. Watch for the blooming of 5,000 crocuses forming a smiley face to greet the coming of spring. Eventually few picnic tables will be located between the play knoll and the recharge basins.

C Demonstration Gardens

The location of proposed demonstration gardens is still uncertain. The objective of these gardens would be to demonstrate the crops and plants that have been important in to the agricultural history and heritage of Suffolk County and our area in particular.

 D Playground

The playground and playground environment will be enjoyable to young and old. The first phase of the playground will be built in the Spring of 2006. Plans include traditional play equipment, adult sitting area, a children’s landscaped perimeter path, and silhouettes of story book characters. A small area will allow children’s book to be read to children. The long range plan includes a water spray/play area.

G Heritage Amphitheater

A graded and grassy “U” shaped area will form an amphitheater with a flat internal space. Community celebrations festivals concerts and ceremonies will be organized here in partnership with local organizations. Hopefully the flat internal space can be converted to an ice skating rink in the winter.

H Heritage Center

he not-for-profit Heritage Trust will build and manage the Heritage Center. Community events, workshops, classes, dances, will make the Heritage Center the focal point of the area. The Center will provide a meeting place for Town and County residents with a large meeting room (capacity of approx. 300). Rental of the facility will be available for families or organizations. Scheduling will be through the Heritage Trust.

J Recharge Basins

New York State and Suffolk County have recharge basins to allow water run off from the highways to be recharged to the ground water. An educational kiosk will be built in the future to explain the hydrogeology of the area at the fence line of the basins.

K Avenue of American Trees

Planting of State Trees along this area will represent the heritage of American unity and our heritage of democracy and freedom. About thirty State trees can be grown in this area. Informational plaques will explain the intent of the plantings and give information about each State. Hopefully on national holidays the flags of each state will be displayed along the Avenue of American Trees. Eventually a few picnic benches will be located in this area.
